Learn about “The Four Histories of Cama Beach” at this spring’s third History and Hors d’oeuvres at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center in Stanwood on Sunday May 20, 2018. The speaker will be Jeff Wheeler who has been the chief Park Ranger at the Cama Beach State Park for 17 years. He was recently promoted to Salish Foothills Area Manager, putting him in charge of nine park properties including Cama Beach and Camano Island venues. The event, as always, is free to the public although donations are requested and encouraged. Hors d’oeruvres are provided at 4 p.m. with the talk getting underway around 4:30.
The talk covers the major eras of human history on Camano Island including its original Native American inhabitants, the logging industry, the introduction of resorts to the island and creation of its state parks. Jeff has been with the park service for 34 years starting as a park aid at the Fort Worden park near Port Townsend, his hometown. Cama Beach caters to numerous school children each year and Jeff has always had a yes, they can attitude, when letting the kids touch relics of the past to encourage their understanding of the area.
